Gastric bypass RNY (Roux-en-Y) is a common type of bariatric or weight-loss surgery designed to aid in excess weight loss by altering the digestive system. The procedure involves creating a small stomach pouch from the upper part of the stomach, which is then directly connected to the small intestine, bypassing a large portion of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine (the duodenum).
This results in two key changes:
This in combination with hormonal changes (hunger and satiety regulation) helps patients lose significant weight, improve obesity-related health conditions (like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea and other), and maintain long-term weight loss. The procedure is typically done laparoscopically under general anaesthesia, with a faster recovery and lower risk of complications compared to open surgery.
