WHY PEOPLE SUFFER FROM OBESITY AND CAN NOT LOSE THE EXCESS WEIGHT?

Why people suffer from severe obesity and can not lose weight?

There are several reasons why people may suffer from severe obesity and struggle to lose and maintain the weight effectively:

  1. Genetics and Biology. Genetics can play a significant role in determining a person's susceptibility to obesity. Some individuals may inherit genes that predispose them to storing excess fat or having a slower metabolism. Biological factors such as hormone imbalances (e.g., leptin resistance) can also influence weight regulation.
  2. Environmental Factors and Social and Cultural Influences. Modern environments often promote sedentary lifestyles and easy access to high-calorie, processed foods. Socialising is often connected to eating and consuming alcohol in bigger amounts. Factors such as food availability, portion sizes, marketing of unhealthy foods and drinks, and lack of access and/or knowledge of nutritious options can contribute to weight gain and difficulty losing weight.
  3. Psychological Factors. Emotional eating, stress, depression, and trauma can lead to unhealthy eating behaviours and hinder weight loss efforts. Coping mechanisms involving food can be challenging to overcome without adequate support and strategies for managing emotions.
  4. Metabolic Factors. Some specific medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), can affect metabolism and make weight loss more difficult. Medications used to treat certain conditions may also contribute to weight gain.
  5. Lack of Physical Activity. A sedentary lifestyle can lead to weight gain and make it harder to lose weight.

Factors such as shame, depression, anxiety, physical limitations, chronic back and joint pain, or lack of access to safe exercise environments can hinder efforts to increase physical activity.

6. Past Weight Loss Attempts - Vicious Cycle. Previous unsuccessful attempts at losing and maintaining weight with diets and more intense exercise can lead to frustration, discouragement, and a sense of failure. This can create barriers to trying new weight loss strategies or seeking professional help.

Addressing severe obesity often requires a multifaceted approach that may include medical interventions such as bariatric surgery, behavioural therapy, dietary changes, increased physical activity, and support from healthcare professionals. Understanding the complex factors contributing to obesity can help individuals and healthcare providers develop effective strategies for achieving and maintaining weight loss goals.
